Do something fun and outdoors for the holidays! There will be treasure maps in bottles, chocolate and a boat ride! What more could you want!?

For this special Wild Dunedin event on weekend of October 9th and 10th 2021 you get the addition of a special focus on the NZ European Quarantine History. 

You'll learn, explore, see hear and feel what it was like to be in Quarantine In NZ during the late 1800s pandemics of Scarlet Fever, Small pox, Measles, Tuberculosis and Typhoid.


Cruise across the beautiful Otago Harbour on the Sootychaser from Back Beach, Port Chalmers or  Portobello.
Viewing the birds that are on the Otago Harbour along the way and receiving an insightful commentary from the skipper.

The Adventure map will lead the children to explore the island and see the interesting things along the way! 

An information quiz and activity sheet you can take hoe afterwards will educate and fascinate.

You will be able to explore the historic buildings, see the old shipwrecks and the friendly chickens and sheep that live here.

At the end there will be treats for the children.

Children and adults alike will enjoy this relaxing and fun experience.

In poor weather there is shelter available.

There are bathroom facilities available.

Price includes Adventure Map, return ferry and treats.


We depart from Back Beach in Port Chalmers at the time specified in details.

Returning approximately 2 hours later. Extra time on the island can sometimes be arranged, at no extra cost.

Please get in touch for Portobello times, which are typically either 15 minutes earlier or later than advertised times.

If you are joining from Portobello please write this in your booking NOTES and we will be in touch with departure times.

Suitable for children 4-12 years approx. But other children are welcome too as the island is fun for all ages.

Voluntary donations can be made to go to the Quarantine Island community group for the maintenance of the walking tracks, buildings and use of facilities.

Suggested donations on the island:

 $2 per person.
